Building 11 to 99

The logic for the teens is "ten plus the digit." Eleven is literally ten-one, juuichi. Twelve is ten-two, juuni. Nineteen is ten-nine, juukyuu. You just say juu and then the ones digit, every time, with no exceptions to trip over.

The tens work the mirror-image way: "digit times ten." Twenty is two-ten, nijuu. Fifty is five-ten, gojuu. Then any number in between is just the tens part followed by the ones part, read left to right exactly as you'd read the digits. Forty-two is yonjuu ni, four-ten-two. Eighty-seven is hachijuu nana. Once you can count to ten and you understand this pattern, you can produce any number up to ninety-nine on the spot, which is a genuinely satisfying moment early in learning Japanese.

Watch which readings you plug in, though, because this is where yon and nana earn their keep. Forty is yonjuu, not shijuu. Seventy is nanajuu, not shichijuu. Reading a three or four digit number is then just stacking these parts, largest first, exactly like English. Three hundred forty-five is sanbyaku yonjuu go. Six thousand seven hundred is rokusen nanahyaku. There's no "and," no commas spoken, just the units in descending order. A number like 1,234 comes out as sen nihyaku sanjuu yon, thousand two-hundred three-ten four, read straight across.

The sound changes feel fussy written out, but they exist for the same reason English says "a" before consonants and "an" before vowels: they smooth the mouth's path. In English we chunk big numbers every three digits: thousand, million, billion. Our commas fall at 1,000 and 1,000,000. Japanese chunks every four digits instead. So the natural break isn't at the thousand, it's at the man. This means a number you'd read as "two hundred fifty thousand" in English, Japanese reads as "twenty-five man," because 250,000 is 25 times 10,000. Retraining your brain to see that regrouping is the whole challenge.

The most common way is to add banme to a number, so ichibanme is first, nibanme is second, and sanbanme is third. The prefix dai is also used for ordered items, as in daiichi for the first and dainikai for the second time or session. For everyday ordering, number plus banme is the pattern you will reach for most often.
